I feel so lucky to have worked with Miki this past summer and when I started this blog, I knew I had to feature him. Take a look at that kitchen! That's actually Miki's personal kitchen, which he designed himself (along with the rest of his home) and everything was completed just in time for Baby Jett to arrive. I would go on and on about his work and accomplishments, but he prefers this description: "I like to make things". So here is the interview:
HELLO MIKI.
VLC: What is the story behind the name of your studio, "The Bakery"?
MI: The space was a Mexican bakery for many years. It still has remnants of the old space and when I moved my studio here, we were constantly asked if we are still a bakery, so we felt it was a perfect name to call our collective.
VLC: I hear you're working on a project for the San Diego Airport! In three words, describe this piece.
MI: Large, Illuminating, Interactive
VLC: Being an architecture teacher, any cool kids and/or projects we should keep a look out for?
MI: I think the current generation of students have just as much talent as any other. The difference with students today is that they have a different social climate as well as a rapidly changing tool set, which forces/allows them to develop projects much differently than we did before. It will be interesting to see how it all shakes out.
VLC: If I could make any alcoholic drink appear right now, what would you ask for?
MI: I like to keep it simple. Beer or whisky...two stones.
VLC: And you favorite place in all of San Diego??
MI: The beach.
VLC: Finally, congratulations on your handsome baby boy, Jett! How has your life changed since becoming a father?
MI: It's still evolving, but the biggest change is internal. The only way I can describe it is that it is the greatest joy, fear, pride, anxiety, love, and responsibility all mixed together.
THANK YOU MIKI.
xx Marissa
